How Network for Good became part of the Bonterra Tech family

July 25, 2024
A nonprofit professional sits before a laptop, figuring out how to improve the organization's website for year-end virtual fundraising.

Bonterra today empowers nonprofits to manage donors, recruit volunteers, and form powerful corporate partnerships. However, our core fundraising software, Fundraising and Engagement (also known as Bonterra’s Fundraising Essentials), is built on the pre-existing nonprofit fundraising software developed by Network for Good.

In this brief article, we’ll explain what happened to Network for Good and how it became part of the Bonterra technology ecosystem.

What is Network for Good?

Founded in 2001, Network for Good was a certified B Corporation. The business was originally set up by a partnership formed by Yahoo!, AOL, and Cisco Systems to process charitable donations. Network for Good grew quickly and acquired several other charitable giving platforms, eventually becoming an independent company in 2013.

Essentially, there were two sides to Network for Good’s business. The first is the nonprofit technology side, which provided fundraising software, coaching for nonprofit professionals, and free online resources through its extensive blog and webinar series (many of which have moved to the Bonterra events and webinars page).

The other side is a 501(c)(3) donor-advised fund (DAF). As part of the sales agreement with Bonterra, Network for Good’s nonprofit software was acquired and became Bonterra Fundraising and Engagement. However, Network for Good still exists today as a DAF. Since its initial founding, the DAF side of Network for Good has processed over $4.5 billion in donations and has partnerships with major technology companies, such as Facebook and Google.

How Network for Good became part of Bonterra

On January 4, 2022, Network for Good officially confirmed that it had joined EveryAction, Social Solutions, and CyberGrants in being acquired by a then yet-to-be-named Bonterra.

"We've been on a 20-year mission to make fundraising easy for small and mid-sized nonprofits. I am extremely proud of the work we have accomplished to date, and I believe that by partnering with [Bonterra] we will expand our ability to help nonprofits enhance relationships with their supporters and grow their missions," former CEO of Network for Good, Bill Strathmann, shared with several outlets in a public statement.

"This is a great home for Network for Good, with its kindred focus on impact, and we are excited to leverage the combined [Bonterra]'s leading software solutions to the benefit of our customers and the sector."

At the time of the acquisition, Bonterra was only known as a soon-to-be-unveiled social good technology company backed by leading private equity advisory firm Apax Partners LLP. Bonterra would later announce its new name, mission, and set of software solutions on March 23, 2022.

Where Network for Good fits in the Bonterra ecosystem

Bonterra offers three main software solutions: Strategic Philanthropy, Fundraising and Engagement, and Impact Management. All brands acquired by Bonterra became part of one of these solutions. As a fundraising tool for small to mid-size nonprofits, Network for Good is now part of our Fundraising and Engagement solution

To meet the needs of nonprofits of all sizes, we offer Fundraising and Engagement at three product tiers: Essentials, Pro, and Enterprise.

Our Fundraising Essentials package is ideal for nonprofit organizations with up to 10,000 donors that are looking for an easy-to-use, all-in-one management solution. This offering provides nonprofits with tools for:

  • Donor management
  • Volunteer management
  • Online fundraising pages
  • Peer-to-peer fundraising
  • Mobile messaging
  • Events and auctions

These tools built on the Network for Good platform are also present in Bonterra’s Pro and Enterprise plans, but former Network for Good customers may find Essentials to be the best fit based on their organization’s size.

If your nonprofit is still looking to log in to Network for Good or any of Bonterra’s other legacy brands, you can access the portal from our login page.
